Raffaella Bianchi Riva, PhD

I am an Associate Professor of Legal History in the Department of Italian and Supranational Public Law at the University of Milan, where I currently teach courses on the History of Criminal Justice, the History of the Legal Profession, and Contemporary Legal History.

Granted a Law degree with honors in 2003, I received my PhD in the History and Doctrine of Institutions in 2009 from the University of Insubria. In 2007, I obtained my qualification as a lawyer.

In 2017, I was a Visiting Scholar Fellow at the Robbins Collection, School of Law (Boalt Hall), University of California, Berkeley.

My main research fields are the history of the legal profession and legal ethics, the relationship between law and ethics, the history of criminal justice, and the interaction between law, politics, and society. My studies cover a time span from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.

I have been the Third Mission Representative in the Department of Italian and Supranational Public Law since 2020.

From 2021 to 2025 I was the Gender Equality Representative in the same Department.

Celebrating 150 years of Bar Associations, the volume brings together academic and professional perspectives to explore the independence of the legal profession.
